Indication:
Oxymetazoline is used for the temporary relief of nasal
congestion or stuffiness caused by hay fever or other allergies,
colds, or sinus trouble.
Dosage & Administration:
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION :
Adults and children 6 years of age and older: 2 or 3 drops in
each nostril 2 times a day, in the morning and evening.
Children ages 2 to 6: 2 or 3 drops of 0.025 solution in each
nostril 2 times a day, in the morning and evening. Use in
children: This drug is not recommended for children under the
age of 2.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
* Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline
* Narrow-angle glaucoma
PRECAUTIONS:
* Prolonged use (>1 week) may result in rebound congestion.
* Use with caution in patients with hypertension, cardiovascular
disease or hyperthyroidism as oxymetazoline may have
systemic adverse effects.
SIDE-EFFECTS :
* Burning, stinging, dry nasal mucosa (transient)
* Sneezing
* Hypertension, tachycardia, arrhythmias
* Nervousness, nausea, dizziness, headache, blurred vision
USE IN PREGNANCY & LACTATION :
Pregnancy: Oxymetazoline has not been shown to cause birth
defects or other problems if taken during pregnancy.
Lactation: It is not known whether oxymetazoline passes into
breast milk; caution is advised. Consult your doctor for advice
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
* Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): Oxymetazoline
combined with an MAOI can result in a severe hypertensive
reaction. Ensure a 2-week washout period before using
oxymetazoline.
* Tricyclic antidepressants may increase the effects of oxymeta-
zoline on blood pressure
